The Biennale für aktuelle Fotografie directly succeeds the Fotofestival Mannheim-Ludwigshafen-Heidelberg. The tradition of the biennale for photography began with the Fototage Herten, which moved from the Ruhr to the Rhine-Neckar region in 2005. These “photo days” were the precursor to the international photography biennale that was established when the event was reorganized: it now takes place in the three cities every two years. Due to a one-time shift in duration from autumn to spring, the edition following the 2017 Biennale took place in 2020.
